Jobs and Economy

Increasing offshore access to America's rich stores of oil and natural gas is a proven, reliable way to create new jobs, strengthen our nation's energy and national security, and boost America’s economy.

America's energy industry is already a big job producer, supporting more than 9.2 million U.S. jobs, including 2.1 million workers directly employed to explore, produce, refine, transport and market the oil and gas.

Allowing access to offshore energy sources that are currently off-limits would provide additional benefits to local and state governments, large and small employers, and numerous other sectors of the economy, including:

  • A stable, reliable energy source to run our businesses and power our homes;
  • Energy produced here in North America — instead of purchased from foreign sources who may not  share our best interests;
  • Jobs directly generated to explore and develop the energy;
  • American-made goods and services utilized in the exploration process;
  • Increased tax revenues to help refill federal, state and local coffers.
  • Indirect jobs and businesses that will support the industry (i.e. housing, restaurants, etc.).

  • For state and local governments, the increased revenue will help them meet their growing budget challenges, providing resources for local infrastructure and public works projects.  Local businesses that support the energy industry will benefit, which means more available jobs for your communities.  It will mean long-term, sustainable economic growth that actually help increase local revenues — rather than drain them.

    Increasing access to domestic sources of oil and natural gas would create new high-paying jobs, bring billions of dollars to governmental treasuries, and provide America with energy security.

    The world will need oil for several more decades. Anyone who thinks differently is incorrect. We certainly need to develop alternative energy sources, but we need oil as energy now. So why do we make the decision to buy it from other countries when we can get it here? Why do we buy it for others (so they make the profits and get the jobs) instead of doing it ourselves? Do we think their scientists are more capable? Or that they care more about the planet than here in the US - where the regulations and oversight are stronger than anywhere else in the world? I just don't get why not.
